Making jewellery – what types are there?

For anyone thinking about making jewellery, whether as a business or just a hobby, many types are available. Below is listed a selection for consideration.

Necklaces
Necklaces are jewellery which is worn around the neck. They date back as far as the Stone Age and come in all shapes and sizes. It might be tempting to assume that since necklace contains the word lace it was originally lace worn around the neck. In fact lace refers to the process of lacing something together as one would string something together as opposed to the other sort of lace. The word lace originates from the Latin ‘laqueus’ which means noose, which then evolved into the 9th century French for lace ‘laz’ and into Middle English ‘las’. It follows that the word ‘lasso’ has the same origins. Necklaces called lockets are usually in the shape of a heart and open up to reveal a picture or lock of hair of a loved one. Pendants are a form of necklace usually hanging down, whereas chokers on the other hand are worn high around the neck.

Rings – ear, hand, toe, nose or belly button? It’s important to know where you intend to put it! Rings for special occasions, such as engagement and wedding rings, would be unlikely to be attempted by someone regarding jewellery making as a simple hobby and would remain in the hands of skilled craftsmen and silversmiths. However, basic rings and costume jewellery would be worth considering.

Brooches
A brooch is a piece of jewellery with a hinged pin and catch which is worn fastened to clothing or can sometimes be used to hold a piece of clothing together such as a scarf or cloak. The word brooch dates back to the 12th century English word ‘broche’, which was a sharpened pin or peg. The word broche itself can also be traced back to the Latin word ‘brocca’ which means spike.  Brooch is closely related to the English word ‘broach’ which means to pierce and can also be used as an alternative spelling to brooch.

Bracelets
Bracelets or bangles would usually be worn as an adornment to the wrist but can be worn as anklets (ankle bracelets)
